Anthea Ramsay

Using diaries, photos and letters Ramsay writes the fascinating story of her grandparents, the first white settlers in Kenya.

While the book is non-fiction it is exciting as anything Hemingway ever wrote about the Africa. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this book immensely and while reading it felt as if I had been transported into another world! I have read many books about Africa, but this is the first one I have read by an author whose family actually lived there from 1899. Ramsay takes us on a wonderful adventure through the years, describing life as it was for her grandfather, parents and then herself with great sensitivity and humour. How wonderful to have her grandfather's letters and diaries, sharing with the reader a first hand account of how the early pioneers lived.

Really one of the very best books I have read about life in Kenya, and I highly recommend it to anybody who enjoys reading biographies or who has had the great good fortune to live in that beautiful country.
